An international organization says stocks of the Pacific bluefin tuna are on the increase. The finding may lead to higher catch limits for Pacific Rim countries like Japan, starting as early as next year.
Numbers of the prized fish are closely monitored due to concern over shrinking reserves. But a report by a group that studies stocks in the Pacific Ocean says the adult bluefin population has been rebounding from a record low of about 12,000 tons in 2010. They estimate the supply grew to some 21,000 tons in 2016. Officials are now confident of achieving their goal of boosting the bluefin stocks to 43,000 tons by 2024.
Participants of an international conference last year agreed on a mechanism to raise catch limits should the bluefin population recover. They plan to discuss whether to expand those limits at a meeting they’ve scheduled for September.

CNNやVOAなど英語記事のサイトでは日本語の解説がなく、なんとなく分かるけど、すっきりしないって事があるのですが、SNS英語塾の解説は親切で英文の理解を助けてくれます。
今回の記事では再確認も含めて以下の単語や用法をチェックしました。

ここでのshouldは「もし～なら」という意味
英文の意味の理解と構造理解が出来たら、音読を5回、オーバーラッピングを5回、仕上げでシャドーイングを５回行いました。
ただ、私の経験上、上記の回数では英文が自分の中に染み込んでいないと思います。今回はレッスン前まで時間が少なかったので・・・。
また、事前に講師から来ていた質問に答える英文も用意しました。

- What are the reasons behind the declining fish population?
I think people want to eat fish because of the fact that eating fish is good for your health. Fisherman Fishermen catch more fish than before to respond the demand. This is one of the reasons why fish population has been declining.
レッスン中に、その他の要因は考えられるか聞かれましたが、思い当たらず・・・。以下のように答えました。
I don’t think climate change or ocean pollution affect the population of blue fin tuna.
- Do you think there is a need to limit fishing tuna?
I believe that catch limit is necessary to protect tuna from extinction and avoid over-fishing.
- How would this affect the livelihood of fishermen?
Once the catch limit threshold reaches is reached, the maximum amount, fishermen don’t allow are not allowed to catch the fish, which causes financial difficulty for fishermen them.

- How important is tuna in your country?
Tuna is popular food for Japanese. We eat tuna sushi a lot.
- Do you think people should stop eating fish?
I don’t think people should stop eating fish. Eating fish is good for your health. We just select suitable fish and we should be grateful to eat fish.
→講師から文章の構成の仕方を指摘されました。もっと具体的な例を交えて回答しましょう！と。
普段の日本語の会話なら、もっと話題を膨らませられますが、ボキャブラリーの不足と表現力の不足を指摘された感じです。
意欲的なレッスンを作るためにも、生徒として、自分の今の能力で伝えられる限りの例を挙げて、説明を加えました。
肉より魚の方が体にいい。不飽和脂肪酸が魚には多く含まれていて、血液サラサラになる的なことを頑張って伝えました。
私の説明から講師が推測して、まとめ上げてくれたのがこちらの文章。
Compared to meat which is high-calorie, fish contains oil which increases the good cholesterol (HDL) and improves the condition of blood vessels due to its cleaning properties.
- Which marine creatures should be protected? Why?
I think all of the marine creature should be preserved to maintain the ecosystem.
はい、こちらの質問に対しても、もっと例を挙げて説得力を増すように注意されました。
基本的にはこのフォームを意識して英作文しようとのこと。
1. give an example of a threatened species-> how to help them
2. give an example of any animal, how their lives can be improved or maintained
3. what would be the consequence if the ecosystem is not maintained
- What do you think of marine activists?
Basally, activities to preserve nature is important. Their activities might change our way of thinking about environment.
Japan Japanese traditionally eat whales and there’re activists against for it this practice. I heard that some of their activities are sometimes too extreme. For example, they damages Japanese ships to stop the whale hunting. I know whale hunting is a kind of controversial topic. However, Japan Japanese government and scientists insists the whale hunting is just for research (or is essential for research).

プラスチック製品による海洋汚染は深刻なんだって改めて感じます。
CNNによると年間3億トンのプラスチックが製造され、８００万トンが海洋に放棄されているそうです。
この講師のレッスンは事前準備に数時間、レッスン後に２時間程度の復習が必要です。
費用もそれなりですが、費用対効果を考えれば、文句ありません。
